Sixth Form Curriculum

Sixth Form Study Programme

How the school meets the 16 to 19 study programme requirements and the 16 to 19 qualifications offered.

The Sixth Form’s aim is for all of our young people to be the best version of themselves, and achieve their full potential by providing them with the tools to be successful in their next education steps or into the world of work.

The curriculum provides opportunities for students to gain substantial qualifications that are both vocational and academic that stretch students and prepares them for education or employment opportunities at the next level. Students get to study from a mixed timetable of A level and BTEC qualifications to purely academic (i.e. A levels) or a purely vocational (i.e. BTEC qualifications) pathway. Additionally students are given the opportunity to resit English and Mathematics if they have not achieved a grade 4 at GCSE.

In addition to the core academic or vocational subjects that a student studies, a wide range of enrichment and personal development opportunities are on offer. Students have the opportunity to participate in Arts Award, Sports Leaders Award and the Extended Project Qualification. The sixth form curriculum meets and goes beyond all statutory guidance for PSHE (dealing with age relevant content) and careers, allowing the students to enhance further important life skills essential for the future. These programmes extend the offering to ensure all students’ needs are met, especially when investigating their future career ideals.

Students have the opportunity to undertake work experience to develop their aspirations and career choices allowing them to apply their skills in real working conditions. This could include volunteering within the school, work tasters, running a student enterprise, participation in social action, volunteering or a work placement taken with an external employer.

Alongside the learning, we have a strong sense of community at Brakenhale and our Students Union is flourishing. There are many opportunities to get involved, not only to make the Sixth Form an even better place but also to support other year groups throughout our school and to bring the community together beyond Brakenhale.
