CCF Summer Camp

The Brakenhale Combined Cadet Force (CCF) annual camp at Longmoor was an action-packed, challenging, and rewarding week that developed skills, resilience, and camaraderie among the cadets.

On Saturday, 21 cadets arrived at Longmoor to settle into dorms and explore their recreation space, equipped with games and a projector. After a safety briefing from Lt Gildersleve and dinner, cadets prepared for the week ahead, including coping with hot weather and supporting each other.

Sunday focused on weapon handling, with NCOs refreshing their skills and newer cadets learning how to safely handle and maintain rifles, take apart and reassemble weapons, and fire from the prone position. Despite frustrations typical of demanding drills, the cadets displayed professionalism and determination, with NCOs providing excellent coaching. Later, they practised drill movements, enjoyed a light-hearted bingo game, and prepared for Monday’s early start and overnight fieldcraft exercise.

On Monday, the cadets set off at dawn for Fieldcraft B, declaring themselves free of ammunition before entering the forest. The day included axe-throwing (where some cadets hit impressive scores), first aid covering haemorrhage control, and CPR. They then practised tactics through paintball exercises and intelligence gathering, followed by survival training with Gurkhas. The cadets learned about water sourcing, tracking, and setting traps for survival, and then set up shelters in the forest, choosing between A-frames and lean-tos. After cooking field rations and a lesson on night observation, they went to sleep in their shelters under the stars.

Tuesday continued with Fieldcraft A, focusing on tactics in combat scenarios. After an ambush drill with blank-firing rifles, cadets learned urban entry tactics (TIBUA), breaching and clearing mock buildings while working in pairs. New cadets also experienced firing blanks for the first time. Later, they practised camouflage and concealment before returning to camp to clean rifles—a task met with mixed enthusiasm!

On Wednesday, the cadets travelled to Hawley Hard for an adventurous day of water sports, mountain biking, archery, and climbing. Brakenhale cadets enjoyed paddleboarding and rafting under sunny skies, while others tackled land-based challenges. Spirits were high throughout the day, with students demonstrating teamwork and resilience.

Thursday was spent at the rifle ranges, where cadets rotated through clay pigeon shooting, field observation, rifle shooting, and even vehicle engine repair with soldiers. Passing motorists cheered as cadets crossed the motorway bridge, boosting morale. The day ended with a celebratory pizza party and cadet awards. Cdt Sable placed third for responsibility and supportiveness, Cdt Findi second for resilience and enthusiasm, and Cdt LCpl Davies won overall for her kindness, positivity, and leadership under pressure.

On Friday, the camp culminated in a spirited inter-school competition featuring archery, axe throwing, and an obstacle course. Brakenhale cadets excelled, winning gold in the obstacle course and Best Military Knowledge. The closing ceremony was conducted with trademark British Army flair, celebrating not just medals but the growth, teamwork, and confidence developed over the week.

The camp ended with a warm welcome home from staff and families, leaving cadets with pride, new skills, stronger friendships, and memories to inspire future adventures.
