Brakenhale School

World Book Day 2026

During the week commencing 2nd March, we celebrated World Book Day at Brakenhale. All year groups attended an insightful assembly led by Mrs Lewis on the importance of reading. There were bespoke tutor time activities for Years 7–9, tailored English lessons for Years 7–8, book vouchers for all students, and an exciting competition where students can design their own book voucher.

During tutor time, students created their own social media-style book reviews. A selection of these was displayed on the windows of the Headteacher’s office, creating a vibrant and engaging showcase.

All staff dressed up on World Book Day and looked fantastic. We saw a range of characters brought to life, from classic childhood books to one of Shakespeare’s comedies, as well as a variety of other genres.

Entries for the competition are already coming in and are looking very impressive.

Best Dressed

Our Receptionist, Mrs Forde even came in on her day off to judge all the wonderful efforts and costumes for World Book Day.

The success criteria:

★ Most creative

★ Most collaborative

★ Must be from a book

Mrs Forde’s favourites:

A fantastic rendition of a classic children’s book—and one Mrs Forde read to her children when they were younger: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. First place goes to the Science department for their excellent collaboration.

They matched their personalities to different crayons and even included extracts from the book: The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers.

Second place goes to the Art and Design department for their creativity.

They weren’t going to do it—but they did! Matilda by Roald Dahl.

Third place goes to the Maths department; getting Ms Douse to dress up was no easy feat!

They brought a character to life from Shakespeare’s comedy, with incredible attention to detail from hair and make-up to costume and props: A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.

Fourth place goes to the English department.

You almost couldn’t spot them—Where’s Wally? by Martin Handford.

Fifth place goes to you!
